Born in the Danube regions, in a small port town, Nicolae Dărăscu will incorporate into his work the sunny atmosphere and the fullness of nature that always surrounded him. The artist will therefore dedicate a series of works in which he captures the fishing vessels, the small houses with rich gardens, the loaded markets or the endless stretches of blue. Leaving for studies abroad, he will draw his creative sap from the compositions of Claude Monet, only to later discover pointillism. Thus, he transforms his love for nature into a sunny and optimistic painting and takes on inserts from impressionism and neo-impressionism in a praise dedicated to nature. He paints the steadfastness of water, sculpturally shapes it and expresses the intensity of feelings with symbolic values. The water becomes, in Dărăscu's work, a trick of journeys and separations. From Saint Tropez and Venice, to Balchik or Tulcea, he will always orient himself towards the arid landscape, where we find the same warm chromatic and dull color of his native Dobruja. After a long series of journeys made throughout Europe, journeys that were inevitably transformed into pictorial motifs, the artist will stop, in 1919, in Dobruja. He discovers Balchik and develops a real passion for its color. He paints genre scenes where he is concerned with rendering groups of people, inns or slums. At his solo exhibition organized in 1924, he presents several works that start from the Black Sea, with incandescent rocks and reddish hills, Tatar houses and azure skies. Dărăscu will manage to lend his work from his solar spirit, through the vibration of tones and the rigor of the technique that emerges beyond the dusty roads of Dobruja and Balchik.
