The appearance of Aurel Popp in a context reminiscent of the impressionist and post-impressionist manners of the native art highlights that, in the Romanian space, the artistic creation until 1950 was coordinated by a generous openness to all European artistic currents and models. Thus, it must be explained how an artist like Aurel Popp, who perfected his creation using expressionist tools, relying particularly on humanistic subjects, was so close to the aura of post-impressionism throughout his career. This was evidently materialized both by adherence to native currents, the Baia Mare colony being an inspirational source, but especially through contact with European artistic life. The years spent at the Académie Julian (1910-1912) or in the museums of the European artistic capitals (Brussels, Düsseldorf, Munich) represented the moments when Western European modernism was assimilated by our artist, evidence of which is also our work completed in 1913.
