Nikola Tanev is a leading figure in the development of modern Bulgarian art from the 1930s. A recognizable creative hand, lyricism, a sense of light, airiness and color, are the main characteristics that build Tanev's artistic world. Some of the artist's favorite subjects are the sunny scenes and city views from Karlovo. With the Karlovo yards, houses and streets on the canvases, that came from Tanev's brush, he invites the viewer to immerse themselves in the works. With skilful handling of light and shadows, balanced color and impressive broad strokes, Nikola Tanev builds a recognizable style. The artist's connection with the theme of the market, the street, and the populated public place is special. In Tanev's works from Paris (beginning of the 20th century), the artist's creative pursuits to present the dynamics of public places are revealed. In the oil work "Karlovo Market", the artist combines the Parisian spirit and observation of the public place with his beloved native motives of the Bulgarian province and the ancient Karlovo. Here, the artist depicts a normal everyday life in the underestimated city through the eyes of an experienced and cosmopolitan artist and observer, flawlessly capturing the noise of the market, the movement of the crowd, as well as the shadows cast on the ground by the summer sun. Karlovo is transformed into an extremely hurried and lively city, filled with its everyday life, excitement and dynamics from the brush of Nikola Tanev. Nikola Tanev's clear impressionistic pursuits take him in an interesting direction, where he manages to combine them with the ideas of preserving the Native. It is no coincidence that the "main character" in his works are views of Bulgarian cities. A characteristic of the picturesque landscapes of Nikola Tanev is also his tendency towards idealization, which in turn reveals the emotional sensitivity of the artist.
