oil on canvas, 32.5 x 33 cm, 32,5 × 33 cm, signed bottom right, in the oil, "Казаков"

Throughout his life, Dimitar Kazakov remained deeply connected to the land and our traditional culture. He created a magical world in which memories of his native village of Tsarski Izvor, myths and legends from national folklore, projections of ancient cultures and civilizations intertwine. Without hiding his affinity for the Orthodox icon-painting tradition, he was inspired by the art of the Etruscans, Mycenae, Persia, and Iran. In an interview, Kazakov shared: "The distance from the Kazanlak tomb to the image of Desislava (in the Boyana Church) is not great. This distance, covered with millennial archaeological layers, is my idol and my inspiration." (From a 1979 letter to Aksinia Dzhurova, "The Myth of Dimitar Kazakov Nero", 2003). The painting "Dance" was created in the early 1980s. It possesses all the best qualities of his painting. The theme, characters and pictorial qualities rank it among the representative works of Dimitar Kazakov – Nero. All components are combined in a figurative imagery, in which conditionally constructed figures float in a weightless surreal space, immersed in earthy ranges of golden ocher, tile red and warm brown. Dimitar Kazakov is not tempted by the three-dimensional construction of the form. Every centimeter of the canvas is populated with characters and symbols – apples, maidens, birds, horses in unusual perspectives, viewed from an unusual angle, located in an “inverted space” according to the author. The woman – mother, creator, inspirer, self-made woman is the main character in the paintings. The themes of love, the earth, nature and its wonders occupy a central place. According to the author, the painting is a universe, a complex world and a continuous source of life. (S.N.)
