Bencho Obreshkov’s work “Girl from Thrace” was created in 1958 as a design project for the advertisement of the 18th International Fair in Plovdiv. It was produced at a time when the fair was developing not only as a commercial event, but also as a cultural one. As early as 1956, a rich cultural program had been organized for the city’s visitors, including art exhibitions and visits to museums and historical sites around Plovdiv. An article published in the newspaper Plovdiv Fair, issue no. 5 of September 22, 1960, notes that during the 1960s the fair’s cultural events featured “the most prominent Bulgarian artists” as well as “renowned foreign performers.” This reflects the ambition of the fair to establish itself as an international event with an active cultural life. In this context, “Girl from Thrace” can be regarded as an important part of the fair’s cultural program. (K.S.)
