Thematic eclecticism reminds us of Grigorescu’s work, from the canvas series created in Brittany, where he captures a feminine character on the seaside in each work, in one of the most expressive Romanian impressionist works. Petrașcu, spiritual successor of Grigorescu and directly influenced by the same for a great part of his debut, painted this series as a sort of homage to Grigorescu’s creation. In addition, our artist’s cycle acquires a particular dimension due to the fact that the model used is almost exclusively his wife, with whom he travelled to most of his itineraries during the interwar period. Except for the landscapes created in Brittany, the sea occurs in Petrașcu’s work following his trips at Techirghiol, Mangalia or Balchik. The first of these occurred as early as 1915 in the painter’s imagery. However, with age, Techirghiol would become a mandatory stop, due to the hydropathic properties of the area. The summer appearances of Lucreția (or his daughter) described the paintings of the 1930s, which were created according to a pictorial recipe well studied by the artist. The work at hand was most probably painted in the summer months of 1937, after Petrașcu had been officially received into the Romanian Academy in May and after holding a speech on the evolution of Romanian painting.
