Painter, graphic designer, literary critic, art critic and professor, Nicolae N. Tonitza is one of the emblematic personalities of modern Romanian art. Known as the “children’s painter”, due to the child paintings represented via the memories of his own sad childhood, marked by shortcomings and domestic violence, Tonitza established himself as one of the most authentic representatives of modern Romanian expressionism. Nicolae Tonitza’s first contact with art took place in Bârlad, his hometown, where in 1895 he experienced a deep artistic revelation after seeing one of Nicolae Vermont’s drawings exhibited in a bookshop window.
