One of the most recognisable features defining the landscapes created by Vasile Popescu during the last 10 years of his career is the simplicity with which the artist achieved those fine and appealing contrasts. The clever alteration of complementary colours – red-green in his case – would ease Popescu into a painting free of excessively rigorous necessities, an important fact considering his passion for working on an urban landscape. The Balchik intermezzo, a period when the painter had also been charmed by the chromatic mirage discovered on the picturesque hills of the small Dobrujan town, would be replaced at the beginning of the 1940s by a revival of the Bucharest scenery, the work at hand being an eloquent example for such moments (1941).
