Georgi Todorov Chapkanov, better known to the public by his pseudonym - Chapa, was born on January 24, 1943 in Valchi dol, Varna region. Graduated from the "Nikolay Pavlovich" Higher Institute of Fine Arts in Sofia, majoring in sculpture in the class of Prof. Ivan Mandov. After graduating, he went to Paris, where he specialized his knowledge in small and large plastic. The Minotaur sculpture was made of bronze in the late 1980s. The choice of the material in question further enhances the impact of the plastic, conveying the weight and power emanating from the mythical creature. In this sculpture, the minotaur is depicted with muscular, bull-like features that blend seamlessly with the human anatomy, evoking a sense of raw power and energy. The minotaur's expression is key to conveying his inner world, which reveals a struggle with his monstrous nature. Does he radiate ferocity, hinting at his violent nature, or does he wear a melancholic look, reflecting his tragic existence? The juxtaposition of these conflicting emotions adds depth to the sculpture, inviting the viewer to contemplate the duality of human nature and the eternal struggle between our primal instincts and higher consciousness. The composition and posture of the minotaur also play an important role in conveying its narrative. Is he depicted in a moment of defiance challenging his destiny, or is he hunched over in resignation, burdened by his existence? Each angle offers a new perspective, inviting the viewer to explore the depths of his psyche and the complexities of his identity. In essence, the sculpture becomes a reflection of the human condition, exploring themes such as identity, power, and the eternal struggle between our animal instincts and our aspirations for transcendence.
