Summer Auction #649/2026

The Summer Auction proposes an incursion into the universe of great names of Romanian art, bringing together works that capture the sensitivity, modernity, and expressive force of essential artists of the 20th century. From the impressionistic chromaticism of Samuel Mützner to the poetic intimacy of Tonitza's nudes, the selection showcases museum-worthy works, rare themes, as well as masterpieces with remarkable artistic and collectible value. We find established themes, from Theodor Pallady traversing defining themes of his creation, from elegant and meditative nudes inspired by his good friend Matisse, to still lifes where everyday objects become pretexts for a profoundly intellectualized contemplation of space and form, Samuel Mützner with the work "Geisha", specific to his years of travel in Japan (1912-1915), but also the portraits from the '30s by Gheorghe Petrașcu and Ștefan Dimitrescu. The selection also includes the most beloved Romanian painter, Nicolae Grigorescu, with works depicting simple, authentic beauty in the chromatics and delicacy of brushstrokes that have immortalized him. Nicolae Tonitza's universe is represented by the iconic theme of the nude, approached with the sensitivity and humanity that defined his work. Still nature is elevated to a masterpiece with Ștefan Luchian's work "Crabs" from around 1908-1909, which comes from important collections and has an impressive exhibition history; as well as Theodor Aman with "Watermelon and Playing Cards" impressing both in size and in the symbolism of the carefully chosen objects by the artist to convey a message to the viewer. The auction is completed by masterpieces signed by the leading ladies of art, Olga Greceanu, Nadia Grossman Bulighin, and Theodora Cernat Pop, outlining a diverse artistic journey, as well as by contemporaries Horia Bernea, Sabin Bălașa, Viorel Mărginean, and Constantin Piliuță.
