Born in 1898 in the city of Sliven, Dobri Dobrev, is a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. He graduated with a specialty in "Painting" in 1925 with distinction and an honorary diploma. Dobrev visits the major European art centers and gets in touch with the high achievements in world art, about which Assoc. Marinovska writes: "He has visited all the big museums and galleries. He has comprehended what he has seen and has realized his path in the arts. He has made his choice and will follow it until the end of his days". Dobri Dobrev is part of the society "Native Art" and in his work stand out the main characteristics inherent in its members. For the artist, the domestic scenes are extremely intriguing, as he manages to immerse himself in the life of the Bulgarian and emotionally touch his inner world. Dobrev is a precise painter who handles the color very gently and skillfully involves the observer in different scenes from domestic life. The artist is like a storyteller of stories, in which we often reveal various characters in large compositions presenting markets, holidays, and others. Dobri Dobrev lived and worked in Czechoslovakia from 1929 to 1938 - a period of the artist's most mature creativity. Dobrev has already formed his artistic style and exhibits in many group and solo exhibitions in Czechoslovakia. The work "Market in Sliven" is dated 1936 and was most likely created in Prague, is typical for Dobri Dobrev's work in the 1930s. With a characteristic warm palette and rich composition, the author takes us to the everyday life of the inhabitants of his native city as: "Everything is in peace and harmony. Life is as the artist wants to see it". (A.M.)
