Originating from the city of Znain, Czech Republic, with studies carried out in Vienna, Ion Faur Schmidt arrived in Romania in 1901 as a professor at the School of Arts and Crafts in Târgu-Jiu. His desire was to establish the first ceramic school in our country. He then moved to the same professorial post in Bucharest and worked assiduously. He executed busts after contemporary figures or after notable personalities of our history (Eminescu, Papiu-Ilarian, Spiru Haret, Gheorghe Șincai), approached also the world of fairy tales (Făt-Frumos, zmeul, Ileana-Cosânzeana), made works with allegorical theme ("Pain", "The Abandoned") but he also sculpted children's heads or delicate bodies of nymphs. In 1922, following his participation in a competition aiming to create a work to honor the memory of the heroes of the air, his mock-up is awarded the first prize and his talent is noted by the honorary president of the jury - the crown prince Carol.
