Tonitza's penchant for drawing is deepened after his studies in Munich, but he will acquire his painterly qualities following his enrollment at the Paris Art Academy, where he learned how to use color in his favor and gained the necessary knowledge to help him assign space and form in terms of chromatics. In the 1920s Tonitza began periodical retreats on the Black Sea coast, especially in Mangalia, where he was attracted to the specific light of Dobruja and created a series of works inspired by the Black Sea area. This period is one of the brightest and most poetic in his career. His compositions are chromatically balanced, with emphasis on light and atmosphere, with vibrant and pleasant brushstrokes, with few examples in this regard: "Dobrogean Landscape" or "Delta Landscape". The current work is part of the period of the 1920s and is one of his favorite themes that he will revisit many times during this period of artistic creation spent on the Romanian coast. The work captures the moment of the sunset over the Black Sea, in a calm and peaceful atmosphere. The horizon is low, and most of the work is dominated by sky and sea, along with a few boats and buildings subtly rendered in the lower part of the work, emphasizing the harmony between nature and light. The composition is dominated by warm shades of orange, brown, and dark blue creating a state of peace and contemplation that reflects Tonitza's ability to convey emotional states through landscape. Thus, the sunset here becomes a symbol of the passage of time and silence. The style he adopts in painting represents the result of a diligent study and continuous exercise of harmonious blending of shapes and colors acquired in his studies in Paris.
