PROVENANCE
30s-50s, the collection of Romanian diplomat Basil Stoica (1889 - 1959), close friend of Thomas Masaryk and Ionel I.C. Brătianu, skilled in 14 foreign languages, a fighter for the founding and consecration of the Greater Romania, president of the National League of Romanians in America in 1918, minister plenipotentiary in Bulgaria and Albania (1930-1936), the Netherlands (1937-1939), Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1939-1945), negotiator for the cause of Romania as a co-belligerent country at the Paris Peace Conference in 1946; deceased at Jilava after 9 years of detention; removed from the possession of the diplomat's family by the National Museum of Art of Romania through confiscation in 1977; in 2009, after the fall of the communist regime, following a long line of trials, restored to the diplomat's heirs.
