The 20 Lei of 1870 was the second Romanian gold coin struck by the modern Romanian state. The first (also a 20 Lei, struck in 1868) had been intended only for protocol and international recognition. This second gold piece, however, was meant for circulation. Only 5,000 pieces came out of the Bucharest mint, which was inaugurated in 1870 (the Schäffer - Stambuliu catalog from 2009 asserts that the gold coins from 1870 were struck in Berlin, and the effigy of Carol I was engraved by Kullrich). Its small circulation makes this gold piece one of the greatest rarities in Romanian numismatics.
