Obverse: ox-head, with a five-rayed star with odd ray facing up between horns, flanked heraldically to the left by a waning moon (in last quarter) and to the right by a five-petal rose; pearl circle around the edge. Reverse: circular inscription ASPRKASTRU (with Cyrillic letters, S and T linked), in the center equal-armed cross, with a globule between the arms; pearl circle around the edge. These coins are rare local issues of the White Fortress (Asprokastron), minted during the reign of Alexandrel (1449, 1452-1454, 1455) or during the reign of Petru Aron (1451-1452, 1454-1455 and 1455-1457). The local monetary issues from the White Fortress played a hugely important role in the economy and politics of the medieval Romanian space, especially during the period when this fortress was an essential strategic point at the mouths of the Danube and on the Black Sea shore. Successively controlled by various powers - including Moldova, the Ottoman Empire and even the Genovese - the White Fortress was a vibrant commercial center, and its monetary issues reflect this economic effervescence and strategic importance.
