Being inspired by the Romanian village, Grigorescu often shows glimpses of time and places that he has seen and where he has been, while making unforgettable the characters, spirits, and atmosphere he has encountered in his travels. Tenderness is one of the aspects that would inspire him and it is also a living testimony of the Romanian picturesque nature, where serenity, tranquility and tradition gave meaningful significance to his works. Campina, Rucar, Muscel, Ghergani, Valea Rahovei, Valea Buzaului or Valea Moldovei would be the spaces to mirror that tenderness displayed by the faces of young peasant women, Gipsy women or shepherds, all caught in their settings. The painter would pay particular attention to the female character, often placing her in the center of his works. When carrying water, collecting hay, spinning wool, embroidering or resting for a few moments inside her home or while thinking, the young peasant woman is always displayed particularly tranquil, when everything would stand still for mirroring her face and the glowing of her soul. By graceful accents and nuances subtly shown by watercolor, the young peasant woman is painted, too, in the quietness of her milieu, with an honest slightly shy look, while skillfully embroidering an item for her dowry chest. Spontaneous and natural, the technique approached by the artist shows the character in front of a soil-like greyish background, which gently overflows fine details of her face and her illustrated costume. Concentration of the inner appearance and of the details shows once more the themes the painter often displayed, those surprising the countryside life and the daily activities of the people he has loved.
