Gheorghe Petrașcu's connection with the fertile cultural environment of France dates back to the end of the 19th century, when he enrolled as a student at the Julian Academy. This is the period when the painter became familiar with French frenzy and vitality, both in the vibrant milieu of Paris and in the region of Brittany, at Vitré. Exalted in front of the motif, Gheorghe Petrașcu will create a series of engravings based on the houses in Brittany. Creations inspired by foreign lands will be seconded, during summer vacations, by the prolific environment of Agapia or Constanta, which in turn will inspire a series of works from the artist's creation. Petrașcu's first personal exhibition took place in 1900 at the Athenaeum, and the moment was marked by the presence of the mayor of Bucharest, Barbu Ștefănescu Delavrancea, who decided to acquire the work "After the rain in Agapia" for the city hall. Alexandru Vlahuță was also present at the event and went home with a work of the newly affirmed artist, and Ștefan Luchian, although already ground by illness, took the time to admire the exhibition and congratulate the exhibitor. Over the years, Petrașcu will return to Brittany and will take over the motifs of the urban space in his works. From seascapes to genre scenes with many characters, the creations made in France will maintain with them the impatience in front of the motif and the local color of the represented spaces.
