The Dutch cartographer and publisher Nicolas Visscher (1618-1679) was the son of Claes Jansz Visscher (1587-1652) who founded a well-known family in the field of printing and publishing of cartographic, historical works and engravings. The respective undertaking operated in Amsterdam for almost a century. The piece was made in 1658 as part of the "New World Atlas".
