An artist who made his artistic debut late in life, Constantin Gănescu created exclusively in France, the adoptive country of the man born in 1864 in Bucharest. He took his first painting lessons from Félix Ziem, one of the most famous Venice painters in the mid-19th century, but sculpture was Gănescu's choice for his debut in the French salons. The most important sculptural cycle created by Gănescu, entitled "Les angoisses de la vie", seems to be the one depicted in this item, with Symbolist subjects being frequently encountered. Gănescu's works can be found in the collections of the Musée d'Orsay (one painting) or the Rodin Museum. In the later part of his life, the artist focused more on painting, having two important exhibitions in the 1920s in Paris at the Devambez gallery (1921, 1925).
