Attracted by painting in nature, a subject that fully responded to his romantic nature, Ştefan Popescu contemplated in his works the beauty of nature, often reaching a state of melancholia. Without being confused with an unbiased observer, detached before the motif, Ştefan Popescu experienced some sort of revelation whenever he looked at the landscape of nature, remembering the moments of his life. In this context one can speak of the lyricism of Ştefan Popescu’s art, in which the tree assumes significantly profound notations. The first contact with the art of "landscape en plein air" occurred in Brittany, where the artist settled in 1903 for a longer period of time. Here he felt attracted to the painters of the landscape of Brittany - Lucien Simon and Charles Cottet, both of the "Société Nouvelle" artistic group - as a first step in finding his own artistic vision. When looking at the artist's work as a whole, it is easy to understand his concern for landscapes, which he depicts while being inspired by reality, but according to his own artistic vision, which comes mainly from inner lyricism. "Autumn Landscape" is the concrete example of this vision, where the tree once again takes on the role of the central character. The harmonious shape of the treetops projected against the immensity of the unclear sky gives off a sense of balance, and the weather-yellowed leaves emphasise the melancholia of the artist's nature.
