A recognizable creative style, lyricism, a sense of light, airiness, and color are the main characteristics that define Nikola Tanev’s artistic world. The artist’s preferred subjects are urban scenes and views, especially of the picturesque town of Karlovo. With skillful handling of light and shadow, color, and impressive bold brushstrokes, Nikola Tanev creates a distinctive style. In the work Karlovo Market, the artist depicts a typical day in the life of the town in the Sub-Balkan region through the eyes of an experienced and cosmopolitan painter and observer, capturing perfectly the noise of the market, the movement of the crowd, and the shadows cast on the ground by the summer sun. Under Tanev’s brush, Karlovo is transformed into an exceptionally busy and lively town, full of its everyday details, excitement, and dynamic energy. Tanev’s evident impressionist explorations lead him in an interesting direction, where he manages to combine them with ideas of preserving the native heritage. It is no coincidence that the ‘main characters’ in his works are views of Bulgarian towns. A notable feature of Nikola Tanev’s painted landscapes is also his tendency toward idealization, which in turn reveals the emotional sensitivity of the artist. (M.Z.)
