David Peretz is an artist of European stature. He is known for his rich and diverse work in the genres of landscape, portrait, and especially still life. His painting is dense and impasto in places, and his use of color is dynamic and vivid. The still life Vase with Flowers is characteristic of the artist’s work. The composition depicts a painted vase with a handle, holding a fresh bouquet of garden flowers. The bright yellow, red, and violet blossoms and their green stems contrast with the dense dark background of umber and black. The vase, placed on a round brown table, is decorated in yellow and ochre tones, featuring a stylized green flower with two leaves. In terms of color, it recalls the ceramics of Georgi Bakardzhiev. The dark interiors in which David Peretz places his still lifes are very typical of his work. This gives the composition a certain fairy-tale quality. In places, the oil paint is applied in short ribbon-like strokes following the form, creating a somewhat Post-Impressionist effect on the canvas. His life path took him from his native city of Plovdiv to Sofia, where he graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts. In the 1930s and 1940s, David Peretz, Zlatyu Boyadzhiev, and Vasil Barakov traveled through the beautiful Rhodope Mountains, painting plein air landscapes. They were jokingly called “The Baraks,” a nickname that is still used today when referring to these great Bulgarian artists. During his numerous trips in the 1930s to the Netherlands and France, he became closely acquainted with European trends, which enriched him and prompted him to experiment in various directions. In the mature period of his work, he also explored abstract composition. In 1947 he moved to Israel, and later settled with his family in Paris, where he remained until his death in 1982. David Peretz never broke his connection with his homeland and his friends, The Baraks. He exhibited his works both in France and in Bulgaria. (S.N.)
