By its subject matter, stylistic features, and distinctive manner of applying the paint, the painting The Pancharevo Lake belongs to the mature period of Genko Genkov’s work from the second half of the 1970s and the early 1980s. Supporting this claim are the following characteristics of the painting: a subject that includes both natural and architectural elements; a colour range built on the contrast between warm orange and red tones and cool ones—ultramarine and dark brown to black areas that stand out graphically. The dynamically applied texture, with varying degrees of layering (impasto in some places and removal or scraping in others) and multi-directional movements of the brush and knife, lends a strongly expressive effect to the painted surface. These formal and stylistic features, viewed as a whole, as well as the general impression and expressive impact of the work, confirm that it belongs among the high achievements in Genko Genkov’s oeuvre. The canvas impresses with its strong major tonality, complex texture, impasto accumulation of paint, and simplified composition. With works of this scale and type, Genko Genkov participated in the General Art Exhibitions, which before 1989 were acquired for the collections of state galleries. (S.N.)
