The date when the city of Poltava was established is not known certainly. The grave of the great Bulgarian ruler Baltavar Kubrat was found in the neighbourhood of the city, and the name of the city derives from his princely title, which was also borne by his descendants. Although the city had not been attested before the year 1174, the municipal authorities have chosen to celebrate the anniversary of 1100 years of existence of the city in 1999, for reasons not explained yet. Archaeologists have discovered that, in the area of the city, there have been traces of habitation ever since the Palaeolithic age, as well as from the Scythian period, which proves that the place has been inhabited on a permanent basis. The current name of the city is traditionally linked with the Ltava settlement, which is mentioned in the Ipatiev Chronicle from 1174. The region belonged to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, during the 14th century. The city was subject to rule by Poland's administration in 1569. In 1648, Poltava was conquered by the Ruthenian-Polish magnate Jeremi Wiśniowiecki (1612-1651). Poltava was the basic garrison of one of the most distinctive Cossack regiments. In 1667, the city became subject to rule by the Russian Empire. In the battle of Poltava from 27 June, old calendar / 8 July, new calendar 1709, Tsar Peter the Great, who was at the head of 45,000 troops, defeated the Swedish army which counted 29,000 people, led by Field Marshall Carl Gustaf Rehnskiöld (who had been granted the command of the army after King Charles XII of Sweden was wounded, on June 17th).
