Included by TIME magazine in the list of the 100 most influential people of the 20th century, Pelé made history in the sport as the top scorer throughout his career. In Brazil, Pelé is considered to be a national hero for his achievements in football and his support of policies to improve the social conditions of the poor. In 1961, Brazilian President Jânio Quadros declared that Pelé is a "national treasure". Throughout his career, he became known as "The Black Pearl" (Pérola Negra), "The King of Football" (O Rei do Futebol), "King Pelé" (O Rei Pelé) or simply "The King" (O Rei).
