Founded by George Barițiu, it appeared in Brasov on March 12, 1838, under the title "Gazeta de Transilvania", with its editorial office in the Casa Mureșenilor. As of January 3, 1849 it was called "Gazeta transilvană" ("Transylvanian Gazette") and from December 1, 1849 "Gazeta Transilvaniei" ("Gazette of Transylvania"). Between January 1 and June 25, 1838 it had as a supplement "Foaie literară" ("Literary page"), and between July 2, 1838 and February 24, 1865 "Foaie pentru minte, inimă și literatură" ("Page for mind, heart and literature") - a cultural supplement on Saturdays and Sundays. Taking patriotic democratic and Enlightenment positions, Barițiu's publication played an important role in the political struggle of the Romanians in Transylvania, in solidarity with the progressive circles in the principalities, where it was distributed through Iosif Romanov's bookshop. The Transylvanian Gazette appeared in Siberia under the name "Transylvanian and Bukovina Gazette" on October 13/26, 1918 - under the editorship of Voicu Nițescu, to facilitate the recruitment of volunteers for the Second Corps of Romanian Volunteers in Russia. It was printed at the Czech printing house in Ekaterinburg and the newspaper provided information to the Romanian prisoners in Celiabinsk, Irkutsk and Vladivostok, and the "Darnitsa Declaration" was republished in its pages. By the end of 1918, 6 issues were published, and after the move of the editorial office with the newspaper to Irkutsk, another 6 issues appeared in the first quarter of 1919. Due to the lack of a printing press, the newspaper appeared here handwritten and partly typeset. "Gazeta de Transilvania" enjoyed the collaboration of some important personalities in the cultural and political life of Romanians, such as Timotei Cipariu, Andrei Mureșanu, Florian Aaron, August Treboniu Laurian, Damaschin Bojincă, Pavel Vasici, Ion Heliade Rădulescu, Costache Negruzzi, Nicolae Istrati, etc. "Gazeta Transilvaniei" ceased publication in 1944. In 1861, on the initiative of George Barițiu and canon Timotei Cipariu, the Transylvanian Association for Romanian Literature and Culture (Astra) was founded. From 1868, the association published the journal "Transylvania", which George Barițiu edited between 1868 and 1889. In this journal he published numerous articles and studies on history and politics. The editorial team of "Transylvania" magazine was responsible for editing the first Romanian encyclopaedia, published in three volumes in Sibiu between 1898 and 1904.
