Emil Cioran receives a two-year Humboldt scholarship to Germany at the age of 22. The letter refers to the compulsory medical examination he had to pass in order to be accepted in Germany, the publication of his novel "On the Heights of Despair", which was published in 1934 and for which he was awarded the Commission Prize for Unedited Young Writers and the Young Romanian Writers Prize, and his personal wish to stay in Berlin, so that from there he could better see and feel "the inner rhythm of the new Germany". From a literary point of view the key passage of the letter is: "The feeling of gratitude [to the doctor for giving him the medical clearance to go to Germany] can only be expressed by writing in the Romanian press whatever my love for Germany dictates. After your advice, my curiosity will embrace [in Germany, from where he says he intends to send articles to the Romanian press; most of the articles sent from there appeared in "Vremea" and "Calendarul"] not only specialized studies, but also concerns of ethical psychology and social life". The need felt in the last years of the interwar period by the young generation for a spiritual awakening, starting from the exaltation of vital, anti-rationalist values, which culminated in right-wing extremism, influenced young Cioran's vision. Although he was never a member of the Legionary Movement, during the interwar period he sympathised with its ideas without agreeing with its violent methods. Having been awarded a scholarship to Berlin in 1933, he declares himself an admirer of Hitler in an article and provocatively justifies the Night of the Long Knives. He will then repudiate this vision definitively, with anger and shame, as an unacceptable youthful misguidance, arguing by it the refusal of any involvement of the individual in history.
