The poet Vasile Alecsandri wrote a long, warm letter to an unidentified friend in which he spoke at length about France and his French friends there, about the Romanian royal family, especially Queen Elizabeth, and Peleș Castle, about the Felibri literary festival, of which he was the laureate, about his travels in Romania and about the Danube. The confidential term that opens the letter is ironic, perhaps even self-ironic, the letter being as warm and friendly as can be. The poet underlines from the beginning the surprise of another friend, this time French, who considered Romanians "troglodytes" before meeting them, an opinion that was firmly refuted when he arrived in Romania. The letter is written in black ink, double-sided, dated and handwritten signed by the poet. The writing is neat and tidy, typical of the writing of "Fântănii Blanduziei".
