55. Edge of the City [1993]

His contact with the world of art is mediated by a neighbor from his hometown, who introduces Adrian Ghenie to the world of painters such as Aivazovsky or Repin. She also notices and encourages his talent, and becomes his first critic. In 2001, the artist graduated from the University of Art and Design in Cluj. With the discovery of the avant-garde, there will be a major paradigm shift in his work. In 2005, together with his colleague, Mihai Pop, he founded in Cluj the Plan B Gallery, which was to become one of the epicenters of artistic life in the city. Endowed with the qualities of an autodidact, the artist will conduct an impressive research work. He will acquire technical knowledge from books and will also use the practical exercise of copying as an opportunity to reconstruct and deconstruct the artwork in his artistic development. Among the great masters targeted by Ghenie were Rembrandt, Titian, Pissarro or Renoir. His first creative period, in which this work is also framed, with a clear anachronistic character, was deeply influenced by classical art. The ‘90s, strongly marked by financial instability, will unfold under the auspices of fulfilling the will of relatives, who were particularly interested in themes such as landscape. Although few in number, the works from this period were the basis of his later formation. The landscapes of Baia Mare, the seascapes; the purely figurative work in which the author focuses on a painting inspired by nature form an initial artistic core and the basis of his creative act, from which then evolved the works auctioned today with impressive sums at major auction houses of world renown. This work therefore subscribes to the stage where the painter assumes, ab initio, a complex learning process.
