Obverse legend: + IO BOGDAN VOEVODA GOS; Within a pearled circle, the emblem of Moldova: an ox head with a five-pointed star between the horns, the odd ray pointing up, flanked on the heraldic left by a waning moon and on the right by a six-petaled rose. Reverse legend: + PODAR ZEMLI MOLDAVSCOI; The coat of arms of the Mușat family (?) is in the inner linear circle: a shield containing a patriarchal cross made up of two Maltese crosses; outer linear circle. Bogdan III, known by the chroniclers as Bogdan the Blind because of an eye lost in battle (he was "impressive"), the legitimate son of Stephen the Great and Holy, ruled in Moldova between 1504 and 1517. Bogdan III only minted coins with Cyrillic letters. He is the first Moldovan voivode to use exclusively Slavonic for the legend of the coins. Latin was up to him practically the only language used in the mint (with the exception of a few pieces of Alexandrel). This piece is classified in the monograph Romanian Coins and Banknotes by George Buzdugan, Octavian Luchian, and Constantin C. Oprescu, published in 1977, as being a gros of type I. The average weight of these pieces being 0.9-1.05 grams, they are sometimes considered as double gros.
