The present work captures a dramatic episode from the War of Independence (1877-1878). Completed in 1903, the painting emerges at a time when Romanian art was valorizing historical themes, contributing to the strengthening of national identity. The composition captures the climactic moment of the battle: Romanian soldiers powerfully advancing towards enemy positions. The atmosphere is tense, dominated by movement, smoke, and drama. The composition is dynamic, capturing the advancement of the troops, with dark, dramatic tones, strong contrasts of light and shadow. The work highlights the heroism, sacrifice, and courage of the Romanian soldiers in their fight for independence. The work emphasizes the dramatic character and patriotic spirit as well as an interest in the details of the uniforms and weaponry of the soldiers. The way the scene is depicted suggests that the artist was inspired by Nicolae Grigorescu in painting this scene. As for Nicolae Grigorescu, he captures the real drama of the battle, emphasizing suffering, effort, and movement. His brushwork is free and focused on atmosphere and light effects, less interest in academic detail, more for the overall impression and living the moment. He was a direct witness of the war, he was a war painter, which gives the work an added realism and emotion. During the War of Romanian Independence, the Romanian army was accompanied by a group of artists, as "war painters," among whom Nicolae Grigorescu, whose aim was to capture directly and on the spot the battle scenes or camp on the front, where he made on-site sketches and sketches about the unfolding of the battles and the daily life on the front, which formed the basis of this work. The scene created by Nicolae Grigorescu is part of his artistic maturity stage, after his direct experience on the front where, at the beginning of the 20th century, the War of Independence had become a symbol of national identity. Emilian Lăzărescu chose this theme to continue the tradition of Romanian historical painting, to honor the heroism of the soldiers and to valorize a defining moment in the history of Romania. The work is not just a simple representation of a historical episode, but an artistic statement about national identity and memory. Through the dynamism of the composition and the drama of the atmosphere, the painting transforms the moment of battle into a symbol of collective will and the struggle for affirmation. The influence of Nicolae Grigorescu is visible in this work, both in the depiction of movement and tension in the scene, as well as in the concern for light effects and conveying emotion. (S.S)
