Nicolae Tonitza began to focus on the theme of flowers in the 1930s, a time when his artistic activity veered more and more towards the intimacy of daily life and decorative compositions, like: "Red Roses" (1920-1930), "Garden with Roses"(1930s) "White Roses" (1910-1920), or "Bouquet of Irises and Pansies" (early 1930s). During this stage, Nicolae Tonitza moved away from the darker, dramatic tones of his early period and adopted a warm, bright palette overflowing with vitality. His works with flowers are characterized by vibrant chromatic harmony and balanced compositions. His flowers are not just a decorative subject, but a contemplation on ephemeral beauty. He captures the fragility of life and the sensitivity of light, in a composition that conveys peace and tenderness. In the context of his overall work, the theme of flowers complements his interest in intimacy, emotion, and purity. The background is rendered in a warm chromatic range, dominated by shades of ochre and red that highlight the delicate nature of the flowers. The piece is part of the mature artistic phase of the 1920-1930s when he achieved a great sensitivity in expressing emotions, a phase in which he combined delicacy with spiritual depth, of inner life and details. The diverse bouquet of flowers can also be seen as a visual meditation on the delicate beauty of flowers. The colors of the flowers convey specific messages, for example, red symbolizes passion, deep love and respect, pink grace, gratitude and admiration, white purity, purple royalty, and luxury. The artist captures the fragility of life and the sensitivity of light in a composition that conveys peace and tenderness. The flowers gain a profound symbolic dimension in this vision, each color becoming a carrier of meaning and emotion from the intense passion of the red petals to the purity of the white and the nobility of the purple. The flowers transcend the status of simple decorative elements and turn into bearers of subtle meanings, through which the artist expresses his view on intimacy and human emotions. The bouquet becomes a synthesis of artistic sensibility and deeply felt emotions, a display of ephemeral beauty captured in the form of flowers and their warm and vibrant colors. (S.S.)
