PSYCHE is a textile installation composed of butterflies, a universal symbol of the soul and metamorphosis. Through its ineffability and ephemerality, the butterfly remains an allegory of nature beauty and perfection, which is invariably doomed to perdition, transformation, and eternal return. The project genesis emerged from the recollection of some episodes that evoke the suffering of the prisoners in concentration camps. Especially children were drawing butterflies on the walls using their fingernails, marking the foreboding of imminent death and the desire for their souls to turn into butterflies. For many years after the Holocaust, thousands of butterflies were seen descending on the ruins of several labour camps. PSYCHE is based on the desire to liberate the soul and to transcend the boundaries of life and is a tribute to the 1.5 million children, victims of the Holocaust, fulfilling their desire to become butterflies. Laura Greaca is a young artist, graduate of the master studies at the National University of Arts Bucharest, Department of Environmental Textile Arts, member of the Union of Visual Artists in Romania and for three years a fellow of the Royal Foundation Margareta of Romania. She works in textile fibre, subjected to various, traditional and personal techniques in order to confer an ideational and emotional charge. Laura believes the textile material is the most intimate medium used to make an idea known, as it daily gets in direct contact with our skin and metaphorically with our soul and feelings. It is also a malleable material that can be used, treated and modified in order to convey artistic ideas. Laura is mainly interested in historical and social themes, which she incorporates into contemporary works with the aim of preserving memory. Her works are also a tribute to the past, still anchored in the present, and aimed at "democratizing" the textile fibre and bring the public closer to nature and art.
