Ion Theodorescu-Sion is one of the representative figures of Romanian modernity, distinguished by his ability to combine the influences of European avant-garde with the values and traditions of the Romanian space. His work is deeply connected to the everyday universe and the sensitive capture of characters, which he renders with balance and expressiveness. In this work made in the 1920s, the artist explores the beauty of innocence and the specific emotions of childhood. The composition presents a little girl dressed in a pink dress, alongside her dolls, in a calm and intimate atmosphere. Through simplified shapes, balanced chromatic harmonies and a decorative character specific to his style, the painter manages to convey delicacy and fragility of the childish universe. The dolls symbolize childhood, purity, and the imaginary universe of children. They suggest the world of play and innocence, but also the idea of passing time, as childhood is a transitory stage of life. The girl appears in a state of tranquility and introspection, which may convey sensitivity and dreaming. The atmosphere is warm and harmonious, suggesting protection and safety. The symbolism of dolls and the child has the role of transmitting the idea of soul purity and human sensitivity, with a few examples of similar works being: "Portrait of a woman," "Still Life with Doll," "The Girl in Red," "Green Hat," which are in the National Museum of Art of Romania. The theme of childhood also appears in the creation of Nicolae Tonitza, a contemporary artist with Sion, who during the same period made numerous portraits of children. If Tonitza emphasizes the expressiveness of the gaze and the inner emotion of the characters, portraying the faces of the children in a sensitive and melancholic manner, Sion is mainly looking for the decorative balance of composition and harmony of shapes and colors. However, both artists transform the image of the child into a symbol of innocence and soul purity, offering a profoundly human perspective on the universe of childhood. The work reflects the interest of Ion Theodorescu-Sion for the discreet beauty of everyday life and for human sensitivity. Through the image of the child and the symbolism of the dolls, the artist transforms this daily scene into a deep reflection on innocence, purity, and the transient nature of childhood. The work impresses with compositional balance, chromatic delicacy, and subtle emotion that the artist conveys, demonstrating his ability to render not only the image of a character but also the fragility of a soulful state.
