Rated as one of the best-selling contemporary Romanian artists, Adrian Ghenie paints through a Brownian movement dictated by his inner states, canvases that abound in metaphors and symbols. Thus, in his first creation period, in which the present work falls, with a clear anachronistic character, was profoundly influenced by classical art. The contact with the world of art is mediated by a neighbour from his native city who introduces Ghenie in a world of painters such as Aivazovsky or Repin. She also observes and encourages his talent and becomes his first critic. In 2001, the artist graduates University of Art and Design in Cluj, acquiring the technique and execution skills corresponding to classicism. With the discovery of the avant-garde, a major paradigm shift will occur in his work. In 2005, together with Mihai Pop founds Plan B Gallery in Cluj, which will become one of the epicentres of the city. The Gallery extends later in Berlin, where the artist lives today as well. In 2007, The Gallery organizes the Romanian pavilion of the Venice Biennale, and in 2015, Adrian Ghenie represents - with "Darwin’s Room" - Romania in the 56th edition of the Venice Biennial. His works, whose indisputable value is recognised worldwide, are in collections such as: Centre Pompidou, Paris; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; The Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst (S.M.A.K), Ghent; Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco; The Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Centro de Arte Contemporáneo, Málaga; Francois Pinault Collection, Venice; Hort Family Collection, New York; David Roberts Collection, London; Titze Collection, Paris; The George Economou Collection, Athens; The Sander Collection, Darmstadt. From the established records by Adrian Ghenie we recall: The work "Pie Fight Interior 12", awarded for EUR8.089.280 at the Christie’s din Hong Kong auction house, "Degenerate Art" awarded for EUR7.362.264 at the Sotheby’s auction house in New York or "Nickelodeon" awarded for EUR7.041.959 at the Christie’s auction house in London. Over the years, several of his works have managed to pass the EUR1,000,000 auction threshold in various world-renowned auction houses. Today, Art Encounters foundation in Timișoara hosts the first personal exhibition of the artist in Romania from the past fourteen years: "The Impossible Body/Corpul Imposibil". Through it, Adrian Ghenie proposes to the public an incursion into the relationship between the human being and technology and an analysis of modern man's relationship with his own body and with finite temporal valences.
