91. Keep going! (Honigberger with Friedrich Miess and Arthur Coulin) [1919]

Originally from the town at the base of Tâmpa, Ernst Honigberger will carry this seal with him throughout his life. The orientation towards the western geographical area makes it easier to join Berliner Sezession, Novembergruppe or Neue Sezession group exhibitions. The artist will exhibit as well in Stockholm, Budapest sau Moscow. Honigberger's interest for art is manifested beyond the borders of painting, more specifically in writing reviews for the avant-garde magazines Das Ziel and Das Neue Ziel. His work mostly contains portraits, genre scenes, landscapes or still life. The present composition reminds of Cézanne's characters often placed in a neutral setting. The French painter did not use to expose details about the psychology of his protagonists, whom he captured, contrary to the photographic common law of the time, in informal attitudes. Two of the four characters stand out: Painters and pedagogues Friedrich Miess and Arthur Coulin. They both contributes to the development of the artistic centre of Brașov, by their own artistic manifestation, and by the guidance of young generations. From Miess, who practised a type of art at the intersection of tradition and modernism, Honigberger takes his appetite for academism and the renewal of formal language, and from Arthur Coulin he takes his innovative spirit. Honigberger's work is characterised of a synergy of styles and currents, the artist will successively move from the characteristics of Munich realism, to Jugendstil, to Post-Impressionism and Expressionism. He will also excel at each of these stages as a drawer - reproductions of his work in the publication "Die Karpathen" are the evidence for this affirmation. Born in a family of artists, Honigberger will always be surrounded by muses of creation. The affinity for musical chords, which will manifest in the inauguration of a plastic art school and music at Wehr, is also felt in his painting, in the play of forces between post-impressionist and expressionist means of expression. The influence of the latter will be demonstrated by the use of vivid accents and strong contrasts, broad touche-lines and the artist's focus on the expression of the faces depicted.
