30. Open the Window [1971]

Painter and sculptor belonging to the avant-garde movement, Jacques Herold is considered one of the representatives of post-war European surrealism, alongside other famed artists he met in Paris, such as Victor Brauner, Salvador Dalí, and André Breton. Herold's work is distinct because the painter aims to introduce surreal floral elements to emphasize the dreamlike framework developed on canvas. Throughout his career in the plastic arts, Jacques Herold explored various techniques, from oil painting and drawing to engraving and chromolithography, managing to outline, with their help, paintings that depict anthropomorphic characters, metamorphic flowers, and symbolic objects. Starting in the 1960s until the end of his career, Herold will dedicate his art to the plant world. Thus, the flower motif becomes central in his work, the painter dedicating an entire series to it. An important symbol in a multitude of cultures and religions, flowers have their own significance, absorbing multiple meanings, such as purity and ephemerality, within the avant-garde movement. At the same time, the surrealists influenced by Sigmund Freud's psychoanalysis, considered flowers as susceptible channels of communication between the tangible world and the subconscious one, they appear as revelations in contexts that defy logic and emphasize the sense of mystery. They appear distorted on canvas, metamorphosed into organic, bizarre shapes. The present work, entitled "Ouvrir la fenêtre", is part of the flower series, a pictorial cycle in which the artist explores the domain of color and pigment. We can observe the attention dedicated to the structure of flowers, how the artist details the contour of the petals against the dark background. Jacques Herold tried to open the window and show the viewer the shape of the flowers at night, how they open frenetically in a nocturnal setting. Thus, the flowers flow in bright tones of red, brown, blue, creating the impression of a garden suspended in time, like the garden of Eden.
