Franz Ioseph Sulzer (1727-1791) was an Austrian officer, geographer and historian of Swiss origin, active in the Habsburg army alongside which he arrived in Transylvania during the Austrian-Russian-Ottoman wars in the second half of the seventeenth century. After the end of his military career, he was employed as a secretary by the Phanariot ruler of Wallachia, Alexandru Ipsilanti, who appreciated his Enlightenment culture, encyclopedic preparation and knowledge. During his stay in Muntenia he began writing this work which gathers important information about these regions north of the Danube, of a geographical, demographic and historical order. The work is part of a series of Enlightenment works written at the mouths of the Danube. It also has value because, due to Ipsilanti's disgrace, it turned into a critique of his rule and the Phanariot regime in general. The third volume is missing. Also missing are the maps, made in the form of engravings, from the first volume, four in number. The binding is period, with cardboard covers clad in leather, and the spine divided into six registers.
