Ion Jalea is one of the most representative 20th Century Romanian sculptors, having studied at the Higher School for Arts and Crafts in Bucharest, where Ion Georgescu and Dimitrie Paciurea had also attended the same sculpture workshops. With teachers such as Vladimir Hegel and Ionescu-Valbudea, this institution represented a real formation centre for the first generations of Romanian sculptors. Jalea would continue his studies, and consequently he would attend the Bucharest School of Fine Arts, where his teachers would be Frederik Storck and Dimitrie Paciurea. At the same time, he remains as an educator at the Higher School of Arts and Crafts, an activity that allows him to support himself. His desire to excel would take him to Paris, where, probably uninspired, Jalea would arrive precisely during the war. In 1915, the sculptor becomes a member of the Julian Academy, where he works with teachers Paul Landowski and Henri Bouchard. However, their academic style does not offer him the role models he was searching for, as he rather found that vivid and troubled art, which he aimed to accomplish himself, in the art of Auguste Rodin and Antoine Bourdelle. The first study period in France, interrupted in 1916 because of the war, and resumed after 1919, would represent a decisive phase in the artist's education, as, after 1922, he would undoubtedly become one of the most valuable Romanian artist of those times. The first sketch of the famous work "Resting Archer" was due to be conceived by Jalea in 1926. On the same year, alongside those sketches perfecting his creation, this work was presented and received with great praise by the critique, following his personal exhibition. The human figure, the physical and mental strain, and especially the monumental execution of this work, would become the true coordinates of Jalea's creation, which, thanks to "Resting Archer", would find the well-deserved notoriety. A version of this work would be acquired by the Romanian State and used as the flagship for the main Romanian art exhibitions taking place between the 1930s and 1940s in Paris, Barcelona, Oslo, Zürich or Amsterdam.
