Nicolae Vermont developed a penchant for realism - which he would display in most of his artworks – from his time at the Bavarian school. His artistic mastery reveals itself particularly in portraits and genre scenes. The social nature of the chosen subjects is mediated by the balance of his plastic language. In his work, he aims to achieve psychological effects through compositional organisation and successively goes through the features of German and French impressionism. Particularly in his portraits, Vermont focuses on outlining a psychological profile of his characters, but also on revealing some socially relevant characteristics. His simple, yet confident line, accurately captures emotional states and expressions of the protagonists. The props that the artist assigns to his models are in close harmony with their psychology. Through the artistic heritage inherited from the master from Câmpina, Nicolae Vermont compiles a long series of portraits dedicated to country women and shepherds. With their delicate and lively silhouettes, his peasant girls are depicted in almost choreographic poses, overflowing with grace and dressed in picturesque garments. Parallel to the thematic cycle dedicated to shepherds, Nicolae Vermont also focuses on the country woman. If in the case of the former we will encounter almost statuesque poses, colourful garments and the omnipresent flower baskets, in compositions with peasant girls we will notice that the artist gives up the strictly decorative function of the painting and captures his characters in the middle of household duties or while working in the field.
