200. Family of Turks in Dobrogea [1916]

The source of Nicolae Dărăscu's quality as a draftsman can be identified in his biography, in the moments when, at the School of Fine Arts in Bucharest, he fervently participated in drawing lessons held by the painter Dimitrie Serafim. Dărăscu chose this part of the course also because the painting lessons received from G.D.Mirea or Ipolit Strâmbu did not resonate with his own artistic self, especially as he was deeply impressed by the art of Ștefan Luchian, diametrically opposed to the plastic of the two previously mentioned professors. Later, in France, in Jean Paul Laurens' workshop, at the Julian Academy, and then in Luc Olivier Merson's at the Académie de Beaux-Artes in Paris, Dărăscu confronts the limitation of painting in studio, feeling since 1906-1907 that his true vocation was landscape, whether aquatic or typical. In these small biographical notes, we discover the reasons why, after returning to the country (after 1912), Dărăscu will explore the most picturesque landscapes of Romania.

Between 1916 and 1919, during his travels through Dobrogea, Nicolae Dărăscu painted about 4-5 works dedicated to nomads and Turks. The settlements, as he himself titles them, are captured in edifying compositions, and the works introduce us to a picturesque oriental. Initiated in the village of Pașacîșla near Jurilovca, Tulcea, the small cycle was painted in the summer of 1916, only to paint a few more similar compositions after the First World War.
