67. Abundance

The decorative sculpture "Abundance" falls into the series of monumental allegories specific to the 20th century. The female figure, often used to represent abstract ideas, becomes for Emil Wilhelm Becker a support for expressing complex messages. The work appears to stage a contemplative expression, where the body's posture plays a crucial role in conveying meaning and artistic vision. To better understand this approach, it is worth looking to Becker's decorative sculptor activity in Bucharest. The artist was one of the active sculptors in Bucharest in the first half of the 20th century, involved in creating public monuments and decorative sculptures integrated into architecture. His activity is today difficult to entirely reconstruct, as a significant part of his works are not signed or can no longer be certainly attributed. This is particularly visible in the case of sculptural ornaments on Bucharest buildings, where his contribution is often assumed based on style, rather than directly documented. On the University of Bucharest building, the allegorical statues on the facade - exuberant and triumphant representations of fields such as arts or sciences - illustrate how Becker constructs balanced figures, integrated into architecture and loaded with symbolic significance. Classic idealization, expressive sobriety, and particular attention to posture are common elements between the university monuments and the present work, indicating a stylistic consistency specific to the artist. The same concern for the expressiveness of posture is also found in funeral sculpture, an important field in Becker's creation. Comparing "Abundance" with the funeral statue known as "Protection," located in the Evangelical Cemetery in Bucharest, is relevant precisely due to this formal continuity. In both cases, there is the kneeling posture, with one knee resting on the ground and the head bowed. This position carries traditional meanings in European sculpture and can invite various interpretations. Kneeling implies a form of submission or recognition of a higher authority, whether divine, moral, or symbolic. The bowed head emphasizes this dimension, suggesting introspection, recollection, or perhaps even acceptance. Considering the funerary connotation, the gesture becomes one of mourning and vigil, indicating a sorrowful but protective presence. In the case of another work entitled "Protection," this interpretation is directly supported by the theme: the figure seems to defend or watch over through a silent and stable presence. Transposed into "Abundance," the same posture can significantly nuance the meaning. Instead of a triumphant abundance associated with wealth and expansion, a more tempered, almost meditative version emerges. Abundance is no longer just accumulation but can suggest balance, cyclicity, or even sacrifice. The gesture of lowering the body towards the ground can be read as a connection with nature, with the origin of resources, or with the idea that prosperity implies a form of mortal submission to a larger order.
