The "Ferdinand I" Order was established on May 10, 1929, to honor the memory of King Ferdinand I, who ruled Romania during the period when the unification of Romanian territories was achieved. This distinction was only awarded to Romanian citizens who made significant contributions to the realization of National Unity, the only exception being French General Henri Mathias Berthelot, commander of the French Military Mission in Romania during World War I. During its short period of existence, this distinction ranks second in importance in the hierarchy of Romanian orders, being surpassed only by the "Carol I" Order. It was one of the rarest awards of Romania, the total number of those awarded not reaching the maximum ceiling established for each grade. In 1937, the order was declared closed, most likely because it had already been awarded to all those considered worthy of this honor. The insignia is in the shape of a green enameled cross, with four equal arms, the upper one being surmounted by a royal crown. The chest star is in the shape of a diamond-shaped plate on the obverse of which the insignia of the order is applied, while on the reverse it has a pin for attachment. Workshop Joseph Resch Fils Bucharest. The enamel of the insignia is damaged.
