The "Ferdinand I" Order was established on May 10, 1929 to honor the memory of King Ferdinand I, who led Romania during the period of the unification of Romanian territories. This distinction was only awarded to Romanian citizens who had made significant contributions to the realization of National Unity, the only exception being the French General Henri Mathias Berthelot, commander of the French Military Mission in Romania during the First World War. In its short period of existence, this distinction ranked second in importance in the hierarchy of Romanian orders, only surpassed by the "Carol I" Order. It was one of the most rarely conferred decorations of Romania, the total number of those distinguished not reaching the maximum ceiling set for each grade. In 1937, the order was declared closed, most likely because it had already been awarded to all those considered worthy of this honor. The collar, made of gilded silver, is composed of twelve groups of two laurel wreaths, alternating with twelve crosses - six enamelled green and six enamelled blue. All elements of the collar are linked by three small chains of different sizes.
