Obverse: allegory: winged figure, emblem; Reverse: map with railway track On September 13, 1872, the Bucharest – Ploiesti - Buzău - Galați - Bărboși - Tecuci – Mărășești - Roman – Suceava railway line was inaugurated. Thus, a traveler who went from Bucharest to Suceava had to go through Buzău-Galați-Tecuci-Mărășești to Suceava, so he had to make a long and costly journey. The lack of a direct link between Buzău and Mărășești was first felt during the military transports of the War of Independence (1877 - 1878), especially since the line portion in the Bărboși-Brăila area could be blocked at any time with Turkish artillery on the Danube. Immediately after the war, at the courageous initiative of Prime Minister Ion Brătianu, it was decided to entrust Romanian engineers with the construction of the Buzău-Mărășești railway. This represented a political, strategic and economic priority as it linked the railways of Moldova with those of Muntenia on the shortest route. On March 30, 1879, law no. 591, promulgated by King Carol I, was published in the Official Gazette, declaring the Buzău-Mărășești line of "public utility", the projects to be drawn up by the Ministry of Public Works. The 90 km line was studied, designed and executed between May 1879 and June 1, 1881, by the General Inspector, eng. Dimitrie Frunză, together with a group of 22 young Romanian engineers. The construction of the line cost 8,548,675.4 gold lei, respectively 93,214 gold lei/km, compared to 306,000 gold lei/km representing the cost of lines executed by foreign concessionaires. The official inauguration of the Buzău-Mărășești line was done on October 18, 1881 in the presence of King Carol I and Queen Elisabeta, Prime Minister Ion Brătianu, members of the Government, leaders of the CFR General Directorate and numerous public. The Buzău-Mărășești railway was the first line in Romania, designed and built with Romanian intelligence.
