Obverse: BATHORI • SIGISMUNDVS, alongside his bust with scepter, oriented to the left. Reverse: PRINCEPS * TRANSSYLVANIA * 1592, alongside the coat of arms. The thalers struck under the reign of Sigismund Bathory not only reflected his control over the mints in Transylvania, but also promoted economic stability through clear standards of value. This was a period when the importance of currency and control over it was crucial for any ruler, and the struck thalers were a concrete manifestation of this economic and political authority. Sigismund Báthory plays an essential role in understanding the political context of the late sixteenth century, especially in relation with Mihai Viteazul, the ruler of Wallachia. There was a complex relationship between the two, marked by strategic alliances, rivalries and betrayals, but also by moments of cooperation that decisively influenced the course of Romanian history. In the context of the fight against the Ottoman Empire, Sigismund Báthory, prince of Transylvania and ally of the Habsburgs, sought to create a Christian alliance in Southeast Europe. In this effort, he co-opted Mihai Viteazul, who was also interested in liberating Wallachia from Ottoman domination. Thus, in 1595, an anti-Ottoman alliance between the two was concluded, formalized by the Treaty of Alba Iulia, in which Mihai Viteazul recognized Sigismund's suzerainty over Wallachia, in exchange for military support. This alliance allowed for the victorious military campaigns against the Ottomans, culminating with important battles, such as that of Călugăreni (1595), where Mihai proved exceptional military talent. Although sometimes hesitant or insufficient, Sigismund's support was an important factor in maintaining anti-Ottoman resistance in the region. However, the relationship between the two quickly deteriorated. Sigismund, preoccupied with his own power games and influenced by his noble court, began to see Mihai as a dangerous rival. As a result, the alliance fell apart, and Sigismund participated in hostile actions against Mihai, even in times when Mihai was trying to consolidate the union of the three Romanian principalities - Wallachia, Transylvania, and Moldova. Even in the context of betrayals and conflicts, the relationship between Sigismund Báthory and Mihai Viteazul remains a central point in the era of the struggle for independence and the unification of the Romanians. Their temporary alliance created an important historical precedent: the idea of a coordinated military action between the Romanian principalities for a common ideal - independence from the Ottoman Empire.
