30. Fishermen in Balcic [1923]

In 1920, the first personal exhibition of Rudolf Schweitzer-Cumpăna, organized at the Athenaeum, was praised by Nicolae Iorga in a laudatory chronicle in the newspaper "Neamul românesc". Therefore, this chronicle was able to anticipate the revelatory spirit of the newly affirmed artist. The work in front, dating from 1923, revisits a motif preferred by Schweitzer-Cumpăna in that decade: the sea. It is a large-scale composition, broadly unfolded, with the boats occupying the foreground of the work. Here we will notice the attention to the representation through color of the effects of light and shadow, the attention given to the texture of the material, but also the presence of characters, somewhere in the background, overwhelmed by the immensity of the boats. The brushwork is Impressionist in manner, but with a warmer color palette, in earthy tones, creating a chiaroscuro effect between the sky line and the action taking place on the shore. Schweitzer-Cumpăna uses light as an essential tool in rendering movement and space. The action seems to envelop the viewer, the boat on the right dominates the scene, giving the impression that it exceeds the canvas boundaries. A remarkable artistic exercise seen in Rudolf Schweitzer-Cumpăna's work, in which he manages to emphasize his mastery of techniques learned in Paris. Another composition, "Fishing boats in Constanța," dates from the same period - 1926, and at the National Art Museum of Romania is the composition "Barges in Constanța," made in the same year.
