"We had gathered a collection of old Oltenian barks. Living among them, I could only see them everywhere... I worked on a series of several dozen landscapes in which I replaced the skies with Oltenian motifs, likewise, the sky was also treated according to the bark style. I created landscapes in the manner of the barks and this was a special way of interpreting folklore," Ion Țuculescu would declare. We will find the motifs of Oltenian barks in this work as well and we will see how the sky, like the words of the artist above, loses its realistic charge and transforms into folk motifs from his collection. The work has been mentioned and reproduced by Magda Cârneci in the monographic volume dedicated to the artist; the author includes the example of this work in the first stage of Țuculescu's folk period. We will see how architectural and plant elements blend with those borrowed by the artist from Oltenian barks. While the tree and the house still retain something of the usual arrangement of his initial landscapes, decorative motifs flood the surface of the work and impede the natural flow of visual narrative. Particularly in landscapes, contrasting decorative groups suddenly appear - the sky is replaced with floral aggregates and contrasting color spots. The transition from the elements of the landscape to the objects that block the linearity of the pictorial narrative and the use of overlapping elements will represent some of the characteristics of this period of the artist's work. Research and the constant need to experiment will be the key to combining all his pursuits. Revealing the special attention of the scholar, the artist will no longer be concerned with the faithful representation of reality, but rather rely more on the emotion impressed on the subject. Ion Țuculescu takes us on a welcome journey around the world with his works. Whether working in oil or transposing the landscape in watercolor, the artist aims to turn the board into a visual diary of his own life. In the collection of the Museum of Art in Craiova, we also find his folk landscapes, such as "Blue Field", a landscape metamorphosed into a real Oltenian bark, where the field has been transformed into an iridescent dialect and the sky has received unusual chromatic values and was crisscrossed by butterflies and flowers. Also within the museum, we identify the work "Once upon a time," whose pictorial narrative impresses with the replacement of usual plastic elements with folk motifs drawn by the artist from his origins. It is no wonder then that Ion Țuculescu's work becomes a gateway to tradition and folklore, while also retaining evocative plastic values.
