From Impressionism to the modern school of Paris, Francis Gall studied the compositional principles of drawing and excelled in their application in his works. The lyrical atmosphere of his paintings is evident both in the works in which his own children serve as models, and in those in which we sometimes discover other characters. Francisc Gall was a keen observer of the fashion of the time, and he transcribed the details of his characters’ outfits with devoted talent. He captures its protagonists at the café, at a picnic, playing the piano, dancing or on the street or at the beach. He finds inspiration in simple things, taken from everyday life and immediate reality - a table, a chair, a vase of flowers or a piano will become the main subjects of his work. After completing his studies in Rome and Paris, the artist will settle permanently in France, and his work will begin to be appreciated abroad, receiving recognition from his hosts in various forms of distinctions. His palette begins to open up and take on the luminosity of the Impressionists. His works become unmistakable references to Marcel Proust's 'jeunes filles en fleurs'. The costumes and hairstyles of a bygone era, or accessories such as umbrellas or capes will capture human beauty in the eternity of the canvas. In this work, the artist revisits one of his beloved subjects: music, particularly the piano, which, along with works dedicated to dance, brings the Romanian painter closer to the work of the French artist Edgar Degas. We notice the preference for vibrant chromaticism, composed of shades of pink, blue, or yellow, but also the predisposition for short, juxtaposed brushstrokes, which contribute to the creation of the atmosphere desired by the artist. Francisc Gall's muse overflows with vitality and jovial exuberance, and her choice of clothing, her hair tied up in a bow, betrays her young age. With her eyes focused on the score and her hands placed over the piano keys, the protagonist is in an imperturbable state of concentration, in which it seems that no external event could disturb her artistic act. The background doesn't provide many clues about the typology of the performative act itself, so we can't tell whether the young muse is practising and perfecting her talent or demonstrating her musical abilities in a recital.
However, the expression on her face and the gestures of her body betray her utmost concentration, akin to a trance. Representative of his entire work, this work gives us enough information about his qualities of colourist and the perfected technique that Francisc Gall possesses.
